Interview With Chris Weimholt
A quick getting-to-know-you session with our new Senior Designer, Chris Weimholt, AIA
J: So Chris, why architecture? What got you into the business of the built environment? C:Ever since I can remember I wanted to be an architect. When I played with Legos or blocks as a kid I built structures not creatures, spaceships or any of the other imaginative things kids can come up with. I just had an inherent desire to design buildings.
J: With your experience so far, can you sum up what you feel is the most important issue that architecture should address today? C: There are new trends or issues in architecture that pop up all of the time. Five or six years ago it was sustainability and creating Green Buildings which I think are valid today still but not at the expense of a project’s success. In today’s market, I think the more current issue we should be addressing is the bottom line. How can we design or organize our buildings to save construction costs while still utilizing sustainable design principles and materials.
J: When it comes to work, what is your “sweet spot”? What do you get excited about when you are working? C: My sweet spot is definitely the creative process of actually molding the building and site together. Carving out the unit plans and creating the massing of the building. I get excited about the way the architecture is going to look and feel to the people who are using the spaces we create.
J: We’ve noticed you ride your bike to work? How is your commute? C: Fun, it’s about a 11 mile ride and 9 miles of it are along a trail that our office backs onto. It’s a nice way to get exercise into my daily life.
