ABOUT THE LA LOW-RISE DESIGN CHALLENGE

The LA Low-Rise Design Challenge was organized by the Mayor’s Office and Christopher Hawthorne, the Chief Design Officer for the City of Los Angeles. This Challenge is part of a larger, research initiative overseen by the Mayor’s Office of Budget and Innovation in collaboration with the Urban Land Institute and other partners to create solutions specific for Los Angeles that provide paths to homeownership and increase housing affordability.

Design entries were judged on their responses regarding housing affordability, new paths to homeownership, innovative models of sustainable residential architecture, and addressing the historical patterns of racial and environmental injustice in housing policy.
